Karen is passionate about helping women access affordable psychotherapy and equipping women with the knowledge and skills to reach their healing goals.
Her approach is warm and non-judgmental and there is no requirement to share anything with the group. Some women may wish to talk about the feelings that come up while others may be content to quietly listen and learn the skills.
Karen will have a 30 minute call with each group participant before the course starts so you can meet her first and get an idea of what to expect.

Compassionate Mind Training FAQs
What is Compassionate Mind Training (CMT)?
CMT is an evidence-based psychological skills course developed from Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). It helps people understand how their minds work, reduce self-criticism, and cultivate compassion for themselves and others.
Why a women-only group?
Women often carry strong social and cultural messages about caring for others while neglecting themselves. A women-only group creates a safe, nurturing environment to explore themes like self-criticism, boundaries, guilt, and worthiness, without judgment or comparison.
Who is this group for?
This course is for any woman who struggles with self-criticism, feels overwhelmed by caring for others, or wants to build a kinder relationship with herself. It’s suitable for both personal growth and for women working in caring professions.
Do I need to have therapy experience?
No, this is a skills-based group, not a therapy group. You’ll learn practical tools to develop compassion, manage emotions, and strengthen inner calm. However, it can complement personal therapy beautifully.
What happens in a typical session?
Each session includes a short check-in and welcome, teaching on a compassion theme, guided compassion practices, group sharing (always optional), and a take-home reflection or practice for the week.
Will we talk about trauma or personal stories?
While compassion often touches deep emotions, the focus is on learning skills, not detailed trauma sharing. You are never asked to disclose personal experiences unless you choose to.
How big is the group?
Groups are usually 6–10 women to allow warmth and connection.
What if I find emotions difficult?
That’s completely normal. Many women find compassion work brings up both warmth and sadness. You’ll be guided gently and can always pause or step back if needed.
Do I have to speak in the group?
No, sharing is always by invitation, never by pressure. Listening quietly is a form of participation too.
What will I gain from the course?
By the end of the 8 weeks, most participants describe greater self-understanding, a softer inner voice, stronger boundaries, and a sense of belonging.
What if I can’t attend every session?
While regular attendance helps you get the most out of the course, you’ll still benefit from coming when you can. You’ll receive brief written summaries each week.
What do I need to bring or prepare?
Just yourself — and perhaps a notebook or journal. Comfortable clothing, a warm drink, and an open heart are always welcome.
Is this suitable if I’m currently in therapy or on medication?
Yes. Compassion practice is safe alongside most forms of therapy or medication. If you’re under the care of a mental health professional, you may wish to let them know you’re joining.
Who runs the course?
The group is facilitated by Dr Karen Barr, Clinical Psychologist and founder of Solace Psychology, who specialises in compassion-based approaches and women’s wellbeing.
